Biodiversity

The surroundings of Carmagnola, part of the so-called “Marca delle 2 Province”, include the territories of seven municipalities: Caramagna and Racconigi (province of Cuneo), Carignano, Carmagnola, Lombriasco, Piobesi Torinese and Villastellone (province of Turin).

The whole area is mainly farmland and maize is currently the predominant crop, but wheat fields, hay meadows and vegetable crops are also widespread. The remaining natural habitats are scarce and mostly concentrated along the river corridor of the Po. Outside it, the wood of Caramagna, or “Merlino” wood, surrounded by vast irrigated meadows, is very important.

The Merlino wood (bosco del Merlino), in the municipality of Caramagna (province of Cuneo), although small, is one of the best-preserved examples of the lowland woods of Piedmont. Click here to download extensive documentation on the flora and fauna of this wood (PDF in Italian).
